FileInfo.net contains a searchable database of thousands of file extensions with detailed information about the associated file types. Each entry contains information about the file format, a description of the file, and the program or programs that can open the file. Programs for opening the files are listed for Macintosh, Windows, and Linux platforms.
If you come across a file or e-mail attachment with an unknown file extension, you can look up the file association using FileInfo.net. Simply use the search box in the top-left corner of each page to search for a specific extension. If you are not sure of the file extension, you can use the Advanced Search option to search by File Type, Program, Description, or Company. You may also view an alphabetical list of extensions using the letters above, or browse by file type using the links on the left side of the page.
